Cabot Stains & Finishes

Oil vs. Water-based Stains

While many advances have been made with water-based stains, oil-based stains are the first option for FinishedWood.Com.

Oil stains penetrate better and further into wood than its water-based counterpart. Penetration is the key to finish and wood longevity. As a company that has used oil stains for cedar over the last 30 years, we have seen first hand the results. Oil also prohibits extractive bleeding that can sometimes occur in western red cedar.

The water-based stains we do use for our cedar shingles are typically two coat applications which compensate for the lack of penetration. We also use latex paints as topcoats over oil primers where desired.

Despite the oil-based components, the V.O.C. amounts differ little with water-based stains. We also recycle both water-based and oil-based waste.

Finished-Wood Shingles

Western Red Cedar shingles can suit any exterior style, from the most contemporary to the most rustic. Finished Wood has the products that will help accomplish your style.

Shingles are finished on all sides in your choice of clear, semi-transparent, semi-solid or solid color stains. Tinted primers are also available. Shingles are air dried to ensure finish penetration and adhesion, the key to a long lasting finish.

Shingles are dipped AND brushed. Dipping shingles soaks up a greater amount of stain than just brushing alone. Brushing drives stain deeper into the wood than dipping would alone. It is the combination that sets Finished Wood apart when it comes to factory direct cedar shingles!

How To Pick A Color...

The links below will bring up the color options of each style. If you would like a color chart or actual color samples, please click HERE. Finished Wood provides up to three color sample packs free of charge. Each pack includes three shingles that represent the different variations of cedar. No order will be processed without approval of shingle samples. Each sample pack over the first three will cost $10 (check by mail or call in your credit card to 828-687-9510).

Clear Solution is a slightly tinted clear oil-based stain that leaves the cedar in its most natural state.

Semi-Transparent stains is lightly pigmented to allow the natural characteristics to show through one of 72 standard colors.

Semi-Solid stains are exclusive and its transparency falls between the transparent and solid pigmented stains. More color and coverage, but remains somewhat rustic in nature.

Solid O.V.T. stains are completely opaque and will last longest of all the finishes. These colors also represent the available primer colors that can be top coated after installation with Cabot's Finish or Pro.V.T. Solid Stain.
